Football Chat: Talking to Richie about Arsenal FC
This episode is for any football fans out there. I talk to my friend Richie about football, and specifically about the club he supports which is Arsenal (This was recorded in 2016, so we were talking about the 2016/1017 football season). The type of English we use here is the type of English you will hear in the UK when friends are speaking. Please see the transcript below if you need to check what we said, or want to read along as you listen.
Mark (M): Er, so, I’m going to talk to one of my mates Richie about football. Right, so can you tell us a bit about football?
Richie (R): Right, where do we start?
M: Er, talk, maybe talk about teams?
R: Right, ok, I’m lucky enough to support the best team in the world, which is Arsenal Football Club, from London, North London.
M: Okay and what’s their-what’s their nickname for people that are into that?
R: Well, the team is the Gunners, obviously because it is Arsenal football club, so it’s related to armoury. So our, our logo is a canon. So that’s why we’re, the team is called the Gunners. And the fans are called Gooners
R: Don’t ask me why.
M: Oh, I didn’t know, the fans are Gooners.
R: The team are the Gunners. The Arsenal, yeah.
M: And like, this year what’s, what’s happening with Arsenal, what’s happening with the Gunners?
R: Erm, it’s an important year for Arsenal. They were unlucky not to win a title last season, they ended up being second. Erm, first place was a team that are not usually successful.
So a lot of supporters believe that Arsenal missed a big opportunity to clinch an important victory. Erm, so this year there’s a lot of pressure on the manager to achieve.
M: Right…. I know there’s a lot of debate about the manager, Wenger, so what’s your…what do you think about him?
R; What is my view on him? Well, he’s just, yesterday even, (inaudible) been at the Arsenal Football club for 20 years which is quite an achievement.
A lot of people criticise him for not adapting to the game recently, I mean there’s been a lot of teams spending lots of money and pushing the wages and the cost of players up.
Some of the Arsenal fans are unhappy because they believe that Arsene Wenger is the reason that Arsenal have not spent this money or bought players when they had opportunities.
So…but my belief is that Arsenal need to be frugal because they’re not…because they haven’t got the types of backing and funding that other teams have got.
R: But still they seem to be competing on a relatively level playing field, or they are achieving. But for some people, that’s not good enough, and they would, they would, rather some Chinese investor comes in and just underpins the club with lots of money.
But the current owners, aren’t the types of people that will just give their own money to the club.
M: By underpin? You mean, they would just allow the club to spend, allow the manager to spend millions?
R: Well, if you look at the two big-spending clubs in, in the UK – you have got Manchester City, you’ve got Chelsea. I mean Chelsea, um, indirectly owe their owner a billion dollars.
Which could…he could, he could ask for that money for that back at any time.
I think there’s an eighteen-month clause where they would have to repay the one billion dollars that he’s pumped into the team to buy players.
R: Now he’s not likely to do that, but it’s just a different model. So, Arsenal seem to spend what they have got and what money they generate from the business.
Whereas many other teams they just borrow money or spending that they haven’t really got or doesn’t belong to the club, so…
M: Yeah, er, Premiership football is well how do you say it’s a business, it’s commercialised, isn’t it?
R: Yeah there’s a lot of money flying around, so obviously, it needs…business has to play a big part of it, so, (yeah) same with anything.
to be frugal – means to be economical or to be careful with money.
the one billion dollars he’s pumped into the team – pumped means to spend.
a lot of money flying around – when we say this we mean that there is a lot of money in the industry that we are talking about. So you could say, “In the film industry there is a lot of money flying about”. Or, “Amongst internet companies, there is a lot of money flying about”.
